What is it?
Angel Food Ministries (AFM) is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. The program began in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, Georgia (between Atlanta and Athens), and has grown to serve thousands of families every month across The United States. Angel Food Ministries crosses all denominational lines.
Angel Food's groceries are sold in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. One box of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is all the same high quality one would purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe.
Who Can Purchase? ANYONE!
To some, at FCC, this ministry will mean receiving food at a reduced cost. There are no income guidelines to be met. It is available to all members and non-members. Orders will be taken in the foyer after church services as the order forms for the current month become available, usually the two Sundays following distribution Saturday. We offer the menu online to allow for 24/7 printing of order forms. After filling out your order please bring the form and payment to the AFM representative at church. Payment can be cash or check made out to FCC Katy or First Christian Church of Katy or you can use credit/debit cards when ordering online. Please write “Angel Food Order” in memo area on check. Boxes of food are to be picked up on Distribution Saturday from 9 to 11am at FCC fellowship hall.
Because Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit organization, food purchased to donate to someone in need may be fully tax deductible as a charitable donation. Any box that is donated will be distributed to people in need. In this way we hope to reach outside our congregation. If you know of someone in need - a widow, a single parent, people living on a limited income, maybe you know someone who is sick or unemployed, please let us know. Angel Food is a way to reach these people where they live, not just with food, but with God's love.
How can I Help?
Many will come to know this ministry as a one-time-a-month volunteer service. It will take many people to prepare the food boxes for distribution. See our link “Opportunities to Serve-Volunteer Duties” for more information about participating as a volunteer.
